PhD topic
Title : Development of robotic features to assess divers’ cognitive abilities in order to prevent diving accidents.
This thesis topic is part of the European FABIS project, which aims to strengthen skills and the industrial ecosystem in the diving sector between France and Italy.
When diving, variations in pressure and the composition of the gas mixtures breathed can cause significant cognitive and physiological effects in divers: slowed reflexes, impaired judgment, changes in fluid distribution, and increased amounts of gas in the blood. These effects can pose a significant risk to the diver’s safety.
The thesis therefore consists of monitoring the diver’s condition in real time during their operations in order to determine whether they are able to continue diving safely. To do this, an underwater drone is used to observe the diver in order to quantify and prevent the risks associated with diving. As the diver is focused on their mission, the robot will only be able to interact with them when they resurface to confirm their state of health.
